People who tend to deny the existence of toxic beauty standards argue opposedly that beauty standards tend to exist in order to benefit the American society. They give reasons such as that one of the main characteristics of this country that makes it what it is is the striving for greatness- the yearning to reach the American dream and live a life of perfection, whether that be in health, wealth, fame, or in this case, beauty. Society sets up standards for everyone to strive for in order to keep this spirit alive. Another reason that may support this opposing idea would be that beauty standards have the ability to support the American economy. They have a perspective that beauty is a product on the market that can be bought, that “sex sells”. They express that standards should be hard to reach so American woman will continue to spend money trying to reach this standard. They argue that if everyone was seen as equal and diversity was accepted, eliminating this competition to be the “best”, then there would be nothing for the women to work towards in this industry. These reasons are valid, however they are often supported without analyzing the real aspects of beauty standards that express how dangerous they are to our society.
